Theory:

Ordering Ascending Numbers

Numbers have an order or arrangement. The number two is between one and three. Three or more numbers can be placed in order. A number may come before the other numbers or it may come between them or after them.

Example: If we start with the numbers 4 and 8, the number 5 would come between them, the number 9 would come after them and the number 2 would come before both of them.

The order may be ascending (getting larger in value) or descending (becoming smaller in value).

Solutions from the Previous Issue:

1.        If Kaylee takes a bath, she will use forty-one gallons of water. A shower would only use five gallons of water. How much water could Kaylee save by taking a shower instead of a bath?

Solution:

Kaylee could save:

41 gallons – 5 gallons =36 gallons of water.

2.        Katherine recycled thirty-six cans, twenty-nine glass bottles, and forty-eight newspapers. Anthony recycled sixteen cans, forty-seven glass bottles, and forty-four newspapers. How many more cans did Katherine recycle than the number of cans Anthony recycled?

Solution:

Katherine recycled

36 cans –16 cans = 20 cans more than the number of cans Anthony recycled

3.        Ethan needs to print out a thirty-seven-page report. How many pieces of paper can Ethan save if he uses both sides of each piece of paper to print the report?

Solution:

37 = 18 + 18 + 1

Ethan uses 19 pieces of paper if he uses both sides of each piece of paper to print the report. He would save 37 – 19 = 18 pieces of paper.

4.        Kaylee's SUV can be driven for eighteen miles on one gallon of gas. Courtney drives a hybrid vehicle, which can be driven for fifty-four miles on one gallon of gas. How many more miles can Courtney's car be driven on one gallon of gas?

Solution:

Courtney's car can be driven

44 miles – 18 miles = 26 miles more than Kaylee's SUV.

5.        Brian recycled fourteen cans, twenty-three plastic bags, and fifteen newspapers. How many total items did Brian recycle?

Solution:

14 + 23 + 15 = 37 + 15 = 52 items

Brian recycle 52 items.

6.        Kayla and her four sisters each had two pounds of garbage. Of the garbage, six pounds could not be recycled. How many pounds of garbage could be recycled?

Solution:

Kayla and her four sisters had:

2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10 pounds of garbage

10 pounds – 6 pounds = 4 pounds of garbage could be recycled.

Proposed Exercises:
