Theory:

Adding Hundreds

Adding two three digit numbers (for example 600 + 500) with paper and pencil involves several steps: Place one number above the other so the hundreds place digits, the tens place digits and ones place digits are lined up. Draw a line under the bottom number.

Add the two ones place digits. (0 + 0 = 0).

Add the numbers in the tens place column (0 + 0 = 0) and place the answer below the line and to the left of the ones place sum

  1. Willy Wiggleworm can't be still. When he goes to school he wiggles. When he goes to see a movie, he wiggles. When he is at home he wiggles. Everywhere he is, Willy wiggles. Today his teacher counted his wiggles at school - one hundred eight wiggles! His friend counted his wiggles at the movie - forty-seven wiggles! His mother counted his wiggles at home - two hundred four wiggles! How many times did Willy wiggle today?

Solution:

108 + 47 + 204 = 359

  1. Jordan wants a new yellow dress. She wants new white shoes. She wants yellow and white ribbons for her hair. Her mother took her to the store. They spent $64.00. The yellow and white ribbons cost $6.00. The white shoes cost $23.00. How much did the dress cost?

Solution:

                $64 – ($6 + $23) = $64 – $29 = $ 53     

  1. Stephanie watched the ducks on the pond for an hour. She counted five ducks on the pond. Then twelve more ducks came to the pond. Two ducks flew away. Three more ducks came to the pond and seven flew away. How many ducks were left on the pond?

Solution:

5 + 12 - 2 + 3 – 7 =17 + 1 – 7 = 11 ducks

  1. Aaron looked out his bedroom window. There were eleven bluebirds in the apple trees. There were nine blue jays in the pear tree. There were two cardinals at the bird feeder. There were fourteen finches picking up seeds under the bird feeder. Oh, how loud all the birds were! How many birds did Aaron see in all?

Solution:

11 + 9 + 2 + 14 = 22 + 14 = 36 birds

  1. Christian helped his mother plant flowers. They planted tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and poppies. They started planting the flowers at 9:30 a.m. They finished planting at 12:30 p.m. How long did it take them to plant the flowers?

Solution:

12:30 p.m. - 9:30 a.m.

12: 30 - 9:30 = 3 hours

  1. Mr. Marr's class has thirteen boys and twelve girls. On Tuesday the class will go on a spring picnic at the park. They will play games. They will eat lunch. Mr. Marr wants to bring two cupcakes for each student in his class. How many cupcakes should Mr. Marr bring?

Solution:

Mr. Marr has 13 + 12 = 25 students in the class

Mr. Marr should bring 2 x 25 = 50 cupcakes for the spring picnic

  1. Timothy and Ryan have new blue bikes. They want to ride their bikes. It is 3:28 p.m. Their mothers said they could ride their bikes for two hours. What time do they have to stop riding their bikes?

Solution:

3:28 p.m + 2 = 5:28 p.m

  1. There is a pear tree in Kyle's yard. It has pretty pink flowers on it in the spring. Last year Kyle picked the pears when they were ripe. It was hard work. The first day he picked thirty-two pears. The second day he picked twenty-two pears. The third day he picked ten pears. There were no more pears on the tree. How many pears did he pick in all?

Solution:

32 + 22 + 10 = 64 pears

  1. It is spring. It is raining. It has rained all day. Steven wants to go outside. He wants to play with his friends. It started raining at 6:53 a.m. It is 4:53 p.m. now. How long has it been raining?

Solution:

                4:53 p.m  - 6:53 a.m.

                16:53 – 6:53 = 10 hours

  1. Calculate (25+36) – (34 –1)

Solution:

(25 + 36) – (34 –1) = 61 – 33 = 38

  1. Nicholas is picking up soda cans from the lot near his house. On Monday he picked up seventeen soda cans. On Tuesday he picked up sixteen cans. On Wednesday he picked up thirty-two cans. How many cans did Nicholas pick up in all?
  2. Our class will see a movie about taking care of the Earth. The movie will begin at 11:15 a.m. It lasts 1 hour and 46 minutes. What time will the movie be over?
  3. Brandon went to the zoo store to buy some books about endangered animals. He bought three books (Asian Elephants, $3.10; Snow Leopards, $6.07; and Manatees, $4.15). He gave the clerk $20.00. How much change should he get?
  4. John read a book about Asian elephants. Asian elephants are an endangered species. There are about fifty-one thousand Asian elephants in the wild and about fourteen thousand in captivity. About how many Asian elephants are there in the world?
  5. In 1980 there were about fifteen thousand black rhinoceroses in the world. Now scientists believe there are only two thousand, five hundred left. How many fewer black rhinos are there now than there were in 1980?
  6. The students in Ms. Wilson's class volunteered to clean up the park for Earth Day. On Monday the class worked from 9:53 a.m. until 11:17 a.m. On Tuesday the class worked from 1:40 p.m. until 2:42 p.m. On Wednesday the class worked from 11:46 a.m. until 1:02 p.m. How long did the class work in all?
  7. Brittany wrote a report about black-footed ferrets for Earth Day. By the 1970s people thought black-footed ferrets were extinct, but a few had survived. In 1981 one hundred twenty-nine of the ferrets were found near Meeteetse, Wyoming. In 1985 the number of ferrets dropped to eighteen. How many more black-footed ferrets were there in 1981 than there were in 1985?
  8. Mr. Parker's car can go thirty-seven miles on one gallon of gas. Mr. Jackson's car can go eighteen miles on one gallon of gas. If each car uses 6.9 gallons of gas, how much farther will Mr. Parker's car go than Mr. Jackson's car? (round to the nearest tenth of a mile)
