Theory:
Adding Hundreds
Adding two three digit numbers (for example 600 +
500) with paper and pencil involves several steps: Place one number
above the other so the hundreds place digits, the tens place digits
and ones place digits are lined up. Draw a line under the bottom
number.
600
500
Add the two ones place digits. (0 + 0 = 0).
600
500
0
Add the numbers in the tens place column (0 + 0 =
0) and place the answer below the line and to the left of the ones
place sum
600
500
00
Add the numbers in the hundreds place column (6 +
5 = 11) and place the answer below the line and to the left of the
ones place sum
600
500
1100
Solutions from the Previous Issue:
- Willy
Wiggleworm can't be still. When he goes to school he wiggles. When
he goes to see a movie, he wiggles. When he is at home he wiggles.
Everywhere he is, Willy wiggles. Today his teacher counted his
wiggles at school - one hundred eight wiggles! His friend counted
his wiggles at the movie - forty-seven wiggles! His mother counted
his wiggles at home - two hundred four wiggles! How many times did
Willy wiggle today?
Solution:
108 + 47 + 204 = 359
- Jordan
wants a new yellow dress. She wants new white shoes. She wants
yellow and white ribbons for her hair. Her mother took her to the
store. They spent $64.00. The yellow and white ribbons cost $6.00.

- Stephanie
watched the ducks on the pond for an hour. She counted five ducks
on the pond. Then twelve more ducks came to the pond. Two ducks
flew away. Three more ducks came to the pond and seven flew away.

5
+ 12 - 2 + 3 – 7 =17 + 1 – 7 = 11 ducks
- Aaron
looked out his bedroom window. There were eleven bluebirds in the
apple trees. There were nine blue jays in the pear tree. There
were two cardinals at the bird feeder. There were fourteen finches
picking up seeds under the bird feeder. Oh, how loud all the birds
were! How many birds did Aaron see in all?
Solution:
11
+ 9 + 2 + 14 = 22 + 14 = 36 birds

helped his mother plant flowers. They planted tulips, daffodils,
crocuses, and poppies. They started planting the flowers at 9:30
a.m. They finished planting at 12:30 p.m. How long did it take
them to plant the flowers?
Solution:
12:30 p.m. - 9:30 a.m.
12: 30 - 9:30 = 3 hours
- Mr.
Marr's class has thirteen boys and twelve girls. On Tuesday the
class will go on a spring picnic at the park. They will play
games. They will eat lunch. Mr. Marr wants to bring two cupcakes
for each student in his class. How many cupcakes should Mr. Marr
bring?
Solution:
Mr. Marr has 13 + 12 =
25 students in the class
Mr. Marr should bring 2
x 25 = 50 cupcakes for the spring picnic
- Timothy

- There
is a pear tree in Kyle's yard. It has pretty pink flowers on it in
the spring. Last year Kyle picked the pears when they were ripe.
It was hard work. The first day he picked thirty-two pears. The

a.m.
16:53 – 6:53 = 10 hours
- Calculate
(25+36) – (34 –1)
Solution:
(25 + 36) – (34 –1)
= 61 – 33 = 38
