Closure Property of Addition

Sum (or difference) of 2 reals equals a real number

Additive Identity

a + 0 = a

Additive Inverse

a + (-a) = 0

Associative of Addition

(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)

Commutative of Addition

a + b = b + a

Definition of Subtraction

a - b = a + (-b)

Solutions from the Previous Issue:

  1. A small business employs 58 men and 24 women.   How many more men than women work at this small business?

Solution: 58 - 24= 34 more men than women

2.     Each team running the relay race has to run 1,560 m in total.  Each member of a team must run the same distance. If teams consist of eight people, how far does each member of the team run?

Solution: 1560 : 8 = 195

3.     Michael and Jill want to share the cost of buying a game.  The game costs $46. How much should each pay?

Solution:  $46 : 2 = 23

4.     The newspaper reported that four hundred forty people went to the mall on Saturday.  The same number of people went to the mall on Sunday. How many people went to the mall for the entire weekend?

Solution:  440 + 440 = 880 people went to the mall for the entire weekend

5.     Brad practices the piano for three hours during every practice session.  Brad has 3 practice sessions each week. During a 10-week period, how many hours will Brad practice the piano?

Solution:  10 x 3 x 3= 90 hours Brad will practice the piano.
